Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections

The Index

In the 1564 edition, and subsequently, the Index included a list of “first class” authors (auctores primae classis), mostly Protestants, whose books were considered dangerous, even though many of these works dealt with supposedly uncontroversial subjects such as astronomy and mathematics. Georg Joachim Rheticus and Johann Schöner were included in this list. Shown here is a page from an edition published in four languages (French, Spanish, Latin, and Dutch) in Antwerp in 1570. It lists the name, Georgius Ioachimus Rheticus.
