Early Astronomy in the University of Michigan Collections

In the summer of 1612, Galileo made a series of drawings based on the observations of sunspots. These drawings were transformed into 38 copperplate engravings appearing in the first edition of Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari e loro accidenti. Since the observations were recorded at the same time of each day, by moving from one illustration to another in chronological order, the reader can easily appreciate the subsequent movements of these sunspots.
